If you want to go to college even being older, you just need to plan it carefully. Some suggestions: You need to have an enthusiastic 100% mentality. I don’t mean it by moving aside any other obligations or not caring about other things. What I’m saying is that you need to really want it.

This is true but it depends. If you’re taking courses, let’s say from edX or Coursera, their classes are offered and created from top universities (MIT, Harvard, Yale) so the material will be challenging.

There’s a final percentage of completion available for each course. You can grab that with a print screen if it’s absolutely necessary and deliver that and the certificate together. However, if you’ve paid and successfully received a certificate there’s no point.

Is it worth it to get an undergraduate computer science degree for someone who views CS not as a personal interest but as a necessary skill? Would it be enough to learn just from Coursera (since online courses respond to market needs more agilely)?

If you see it as a necessary skill, then you should pursue a CS degree. However it’s entirely objective. Most of the time, the degree is an additional title that you have to showcase your achievement and most employers don’t necessarily care about a title, but for results, interaction and hands-on experience.
